The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) released its report Limiting Overshoot on September 2, stating that global warming exceeding the 1.5°C goal set by the Paris Agreement has become unavoidable. The report projects that the global average temperature rise may exceed 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels in the coming years; even under the most optimistic scenario, warming will reach at least 1.8°C. Once warming surpasses 1.5°C, extreme weather, ecosystem damage, and the risk of inundation facing low-lying coastal cities and small island states will all further intensify.
